Titanium 15-3-3-3
Titanium 15-3-3-3 is an age hardenable, metastable-beta alloy used primarily in sheet metal applications due to its excellent strength and cold formability characteristics. Titanium 15-3-3-3 is available in either coil or foil form. Titanium 15-3-3-3 is currently used primarily for airframe applications although it has also been considered for a variety of aerospace fasteners, tubing and tankage components. Experienced operators have compared Titanium 15-3-3-3 characteristics to those found in 316 stainless steel.
Recommended practice of Titanium 15-3-3-3 includes high coolant flow (to offset the material's low thermal conductivity), slow speeds and relatively high feed rates. Titanium 15-3-3-3 can be hot or cold formed and will exhibit characteristics equivalent to those found in a 1/8 to 1/4 hard austenitic stainless steel. Titanium 15-3-3-3 is rated as "good" in terms of weldability. You should solution treat Titanium 15-3-3-3 at 788-816 C (1450-1500 F), 3-30 minutes followed by air cooling. Rough forge Titanium 15-3-3-3 at 982-1093 C (1800-2000 F), finish at 816-927 C (1500-1700 F). Titanium 15-3-3-3 is strip-producible and highly cold formable.
The cold working characteristics of Titanium 15-3-3-3 are very similar to those found in austenitic stainless steels. Titanium 15-3-3-3 is a metastable beta titanium alloy that offers substantial weight reductions over other engineering materials. In the solution treated condition, Titanium 15-3-3-3 has excellent cold formability; in aged condition, it has high strength. Titanium 15-3-3-3 is a production alloy that is currently used for critical applications on air and space vehicles. Titanium 15-3-3-3 is usually acceptable for use at temperatures up to 550°F (288°C).
Note: The composition of this alloy is Titanium 15V-3CR-3SN-3AL. It can come as either Titanium 15V-3CR-3SN-3AL Coil or Titanium 15V-3CR-3SN-3AL Foil.
Titanium 15-3-3-3 Foil or Titanium 15-3-3-3 Coil is available from Alloys International.
